Days Between Two Dates — the Gap in Days, Weeks, Months and Working Days

Pick two dates and the gap comes out every way you might need it: calendar days, the same span written as years-months-days, weeks, whole months, and how many of those days are weekdays. Optional clock times turn it into an hours figure.

Two dates is all it needs. The clock boxes are optional — fill them when the hours matter, for a shift, a flight or a deadline.

Which days get counted

The same span, asked several ways

A span of dates has to be reported in different units depending on who is asking. A project gets working days, a lease gets months, a notice period gets “one year and eleven days”, a flight plan gets hours. Both dates go in once and every reading comes out.

Optional clock times make it a duration calculator as well: 2026-04-02 09:30 to 2026-04-04 18:15 comes out as the day count and the hour count.

Which days are counted

The default is the convention most scheduling tools use: the first day counts, the last one does not, so 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-02 is one day. The checkbox switches to inclusive counting, which is what a hotel night roster or a leave request usually means — the same two dates become two days.

The weekday tally, the Saturday/Sunday tally and the weeks figure are all taken over the counted days, so the first two always add up to the calendar-day figure next to them.

Weekdays means Monday to Friday. Public holidays are not taken into account, and neither are make-up working weekends, so a Chinese golden week counts as five weekdays and two rest days until you correct it yourself.

Why the exact span is awkward

Two dates rarely differ by a whole number of months, so the exact figure is a breakdown: years, months, days and, when times are given, hours and minutes. The month step counts whole months forward from the start, and a month with no matching day number lands on its last day — which is why 2026-01-31 to 2026-02-28 reads as 1 month, and 2026-01-31 to 2026-03-01 as 1 month 1 day. The date adding page uses the same rule, so the two agree.

The calendar-day figure and the exact figure answer different questions and will not always look consistent — the day count is fixed by the calendar, the breakdown depends on where the month boundaries fall.

Questions

Are the dates sent anywhere? No. The four boxes are read by the script and every figure is computed locally — what you type never leaves this device.

What if I put the later date first? It is sorted and the result line says so. The gap is the same either way; the weekday of each date stays attached to its own date.

Why does the hours box show a dash? Because neither clock box was filled. Without times, “hours” would just be the day count multiplied by 24.

Want the other direction — a date plus a duration? That is the date adding page.
